I’ve never really had bad eyesight, until the more recent years. It started slowly with random murkiness & then later it sort of became a challenge to read my emails. At first I thought it was the glare of my computer screen but then it took me longer to read a sentence in a book. I was in denial for a long time until my headaches became more frequent & almost made me hate reading at night. No, this cannot go on! So, my first reaction was of course, ‘Uurgh! Now I have to wear specs – Dammit.’

I think I got my first prescribed pair 3 years ago, so it’s been a couple of years now & I’m still using them. They’re a beautiful well designed, square framed pair of Raybans which have done me so well! But even after getting them, I still had frequent headaches & it was definitely becoming a problem for me to concentrate at work. My next step was to visit a neurologist to assess my brain but everything came back normal. Now what?

Not too long ago I headed to the Mellins Eyecare store in Canal Walk for the Zeiss eye test, an intricate eye exam that uses technology to create personalized lenses using the eyes’ shape & placement, in order to create a lens made specifically for you. The process is a bit longer than the usual eye test because it measures where exactly your pupil lies, the center of rotation & enhances your vision where you need it most. It’s kind of like getting your eyes’ fingerprint. After my test, they told me that I have an astigmatism in my left eye (a defect in a lens caused by a deviation from spherical curvature, which results in distorted images & prevents light rays from meeting at a common focus) which explained the headaches but that the lenses would help reduce the strain. Which it did!

Finally, the fun bit! It was time to choose my frames. I decided to get prescription sunglasses instead of spectacles & I chose these gorgeous matte black Vogue eyewear frames! The lenses had to be sent to Germany to be fitted so I waited quite a while to receive them but it was so worth it! You know how when you have your windshield cleaned at the garage & you like ‘Why didn’t I do this sooner?’ The effect is exactly the same! I can see the road signs better, it mellows down the glare of the sun on a wet road & I can’t remember the last time I had to take a Panado after driving.

I love how you would never tell that these are prescribed lenses. The matte black texture is perfect for winter & of course they’re Vogue, coz you know the girl’s obsessed!
